The race, now called BOTSWANA LIFE CLASSIC RUN, boasts a new identity that highlights the refreshed look and also incorporates the exciting new dynamics of the race. The race used to be run over a two (2) day period, firstly going up the Kgale Hill on the first day and a run through parts of the city on the second day. Now the runners took a 10km scenic route through the city centre, starting, and finishing at the BLIL Head Office.
The category groupings have remained the same as follows:
Junior Men & Junior Ladies born 01.01.93 or after
Senior Men & Senior Ladies 20 years & above
Veteran Men 40 years & above
Veteran Ladies 35 years & above
Masters Men 45 years & above
Masters Ladies 50 years & above
Men’s Teams First 4 finishers in the same team
Ladies Teams First 4 finishers in the same tea
There was a 4km fun run, the route of which went around the Botswana Life offices then to Riverwalk and back to the offices.
The total sponsorship for 2012 amounted to P90 000, which includes cash prizes totaling P30 000 which was awarded to winners across all categories. Registration for this year was intensified with weekly registration at the local malls and at the GRC offices. This bore results as the race saw a great increase in attendance.
The annual event, which has been known to attract local star athletes such as Ndabili Bashingili, Kabo Gabaseme and Terence Bakwena was certainly something worth looking forward to. Botswana Life is committed to supporting local sports and the reinventing of this race is just one sign of its intention to keep the support going and even grow the sport.
