Johan van Schalkwyk was appointed as Chief Operating Officer (COO) in May 2023. He brings with him over 20 years of experience from the insurance industry. Johan began his professional career at Boland PKS in South Africa. 2 years later, he took on the role of Operations Manager for Sanlam Life South Africa. From here, he joined NICO Life Malawi for 2 years as COO and later moved to Sanlam Nigeria for 4 years. His most recent experience, prior to joining Botswana Life, was with Sanlam Emerging Markets (SEM), working to support SEM growth in ten African markets, as well as to improve operational efficiency and system performance across markets.
Johan holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree with Specialisation in Management, from the University of South Africa. He also holds a National Diploma in Internal Auditing from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and has completed the University of Stellenbosch Business School's Executive MBA programme. He is passionate about driving sustainable business growth initiatives in single-country and multinational Pan-African organisations by providing strategic direction across the insurance value chain.
